Are you tired of waxing, shaving, and tweezing unwanted hair? Laser hair removal is a permanent hair reduction treatment; it’s a popular way for people of all genders to remove unwanted hair from any area.
What is laser hair removal?
Without damaging the surrounding skin, controlled flashes of intense pulses of light penetrate the area of skin being treated and is absorbed into the hair follicles. The heat generated in the process targets, damages and destroys the hair and its potential for regrowth. The results are permanent hair reduction, so you no longer have to worry about shaving or waxing, or plucking.
What should I expect during laser hair removal?
First, you will meet with our experienced technician for a free consultation. This ensures that the optimal treatment plan for your hair and skin type is selected. You will also be provided protective eyewear during the treatment to shield your eyes from the laser/IPL. A cool ultra sound gel will be applied to protect the skin being treated as we only want the hair follicle to heat up. Numbing cream is rarely used, especially the first few appointments as that's when the technician will be observing how your skin responds to the treatment. If the client can't feel the degree of heat that's being implemented, they can't inform the technician that it is "too hot" and that can lead to a burn - if the laser is too painful, we adjust the settings accordingly. Also if the client "barely feels anything", the technician would then increase the settings. Treatments are quick, easy, and usually take between 10-30 minutes.
What happens after the laser treatments?
After your treatment, you will notice the treated hair beginning to fall out. There are three stages in the growth cycle, so by staggering the treatments several weeks apart, we ensure that all follicles are destroyed during the growth phase.
Where on my body can I get laser hair removal?
Pretty much any where on your body that you grow hair! We cannot however perform laser hair removal over a tattoo.
How fast does laser hair removal work?
Results are immediate following your first treatment; you will notice a reduction in hair growth of 10%, with increased results after each session. For best results, keep to the schedule that your technician recommends. For example, if you were getting your face treated, it would be 10 treatments, 4 weeks apart. For underarms, it would be 10 treatments, 6 weeks apart. For your legs, it would likely be 10 treatments, 8 weeks apart. Your technician will work with you on this and come up with a schedule that will work best for you. Most people need between 8 to 12 treatments.
How long does laser hair removal last?
Laser hair removal destroys the hair follicle so that the hair will never regrow. In some cases, the laser only damages the follicle, in which case more treatments will need to be scheduled to eliminate any remaining hair. IPL does require occasional maintenance.
How many treatments will I need?
On average, 8 to 12 treatments are required. This will vary according to skin and hair colour, as well as the specific areas that you are targeting. Your technician will book you in for your next appointment before you leave, appointments are 4 to 8 weeks apart, depending on the area being treated. It's important to keep to the schedule for optimal results. Areas with very dense hair or very fine hair may require more treatments.
How do I prepare for a laser hair removal appointment?
On the day of treatment, we ask that you come cleanly shaven in the area that you want laser hair removal. Refrain from applying any creams or lotions or other skin care products before your laser hair removal treatment.
Do different skin types or hair colour affect laser hair removal?
Yes, with different skin types and hair colour, results do vary. Since the laser detects and targets the pigment in the hair follicle, the most effective results are with individuals who have a lighter complexion and darker hair. The laser is drawn to colour and targets hair that is darker than your skin tone. Because the laser is drawn to dark pigment, those with lighter hair colours such as blonde, red, gray or white, the laser is unable to detect pigmentation and results would be much less effective. For darker complexions, more treatments may be necessary. At Simply Radiant, we will customize treatments for all skin types.
Are there side effects or risks to laser hair removal?
Following the procedure, you may notice some redness and mild swelling around the hair follicles. Changes can occur in the colour of your skin, especially for those with darker complexions, but that's usually just temporary. Temporary irritation, hives and itching is also a side effect. If you do get this after treatment, please let your technician know. Applying a cold cloth and some soothing cream will help, ie. aloe vera or Aveeno with oatmeal. Do not scratch as that will make the itching worse. In some cases, blisters may form. Be careful not to pick at any scabs as that can lead to scarring. It is also strongly advised to avoid direct exposure to the sun after treatment.
